GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO)— A man is in jail after he allegedly shoots off his gun in a motel room, injuring a man in the next room.
According to a Grand Junction Police arrest affidavit, Zachariah McCullough, 26, was watching a football game and drinking beer with some friends a Mesa Inn room on Horizon Drive Sunday night.
One of his friends says McCullough pulled out a large revolver from a gun case and was bragging about it when someone told him to unload it.
The affidavit says as McCullough continued to handle it, the gun went off, and the bullet went through the wall.
A man in the adjoining room received a wound to his shoulder.
Police say the victim was injured by shrapnel from the blast. He was treated at a local hospital and released for minor injuries.
According to the affidavit, after the gun went off, McCullough panicked and left the room with the firearm, driving away in a gold SUV.
Those left in the hotel room told police that McCullough shot the gun and allowed the officers to search the room.
They found a pack of “Aviator” poker cards and two cases of beer.
Police then reached out to McCullough, who denied being on Horizon Drive in the past week and denied owning a firearm.
Officers searched the gold SUV McCullough was driving and found a receipt for a burrito and deck of “Aviator” playing cards from the Shell gas station on Horizon Drive, the same items found in the Mesa Inn motel room.
McCullough was taken into custody and transported to the Mesa County jail. There, he still maintained his innocence, the affidavit says.
He was arrested for prohibited use of a weapon, illegal discharge of a firearm, reckless endangerment and third-degree assault.
