MESA COUNTY, Colo. After Sheriff Stan Hilkey's recent resignation, the board of County Commissioners voted Monday to appoint Undersheriff Rebecca Spiess to assume the office of Sheriff.
The Commissioners stated that they desire the transition following Sheriff Hilkey’s departure be accomplished with as little disruption as possible, and that the stability of the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office be ensured to the greatest extent possible.
Spiess will assume the office on June 16 and will serve as Sheriff until January, 2015 at which point an elected Sheriff will be sworn into office.
