United Way raises $457k to start anniversary campaign

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO)-- Right here in Colorado-- 125 years ago-- one of the most well-known nonprofit movements in the world was born.

In 1887 the United Way was formed in Denver.

Now it has grown into a worldwide organization committed to improving communities though community action and support.

To recognize 125 years of service, the United Way of Mesa County has set a goal to raise $1.25 million for this years fundraising drive.

Employees from 35 local companies raised an estimated $457,325 during the CentruyLink and GJ Rockies "Reality TV" Annual Fundraising Drive Kickoff today.

That's 35 percent of the $1.25 million goal. "Pacesetter" organizations like the ones that donated today usually account for about 40 percent of the overall campaign. There were fewer Pacesetter organizations this year compared to last.

All of the money raised stays right here in Mesa County and will go toward local agencies.
