Woman who poisoned husband’s whiskey gets 24 years

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) – The woman convicted of plotting to kill her husband by poisoning his whiskey will spend 24 years in prison.

A judge passed down that maximum sentence Monday to Deone Graham, 45, stating she’ll have to serve another six-year sentence concurrently for inducing consumption of controlled substance by fraudulent means.

In August, Graham pleaded guilty to charges of solicitation to commit first degree murder. A police report says Graham suspected that her husband, Johnny, was cheating on her, and then he asked her for a divorce. She then decided to kill him to collect his retirement benefits.

According to the report, Graham put morphine, eye drops and crushed pills into Johnny’s whiskey in February. He was partially blind and sick for three days.

Johnny's friend also drank the tainted whiskey and suffers lingering problems, which is why Graham is serving the concurrent six years.

She was planning another poisoning when her friend turned her in.

In court today, a counselor recommended that Graham not only be incarcerated but receive psychiatric treatment as well, since she suffers from PTSD, has borderline personality disorder and was sexually abused starting at the age of four.

Johnny was not in the courtroom.
