Women waiting until their 30's to have babies

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. Decades ago it was average for women in their early 20's to become mom, but there's a baby boom among 30-somethings.

The number of women between 35 and 39 giving birth increased to 11 per 1,000 in 2012 compared to 2.1 per 1,000 in 1970.

Veronica Daehn-Harvey is expecting her third child in her 30's, but had her first two when she was in her 20's. Even though when she was planning her life she didn't expect to have a baby at 34 she's more prepared now than when she gave birth to her son Rye at just 25.

"Those first couple weeks even those first couple months were really difficult and I remember thinking what did I do," Daehn-Harvey.

Daehn-Harvey is going into her third pregnancy more secure than her other two and she isn't alone. More and More women are choosing to be settled before having a baby. Officials at the VA hospital said they're seeing an increase in this trend among their patients all in hops of benefiting their kids.

"They're able to get that career established also their foundation for their family is very established and solid and financially they're in a little better position to have children," Pamela Schultz, VA Hospital.

While being an older mom has its perks there are some risk factors. Women in their 30's run a higher risk of hypertension, gestational diabetes and chromosomal problems and they could have pre-existing conditions that might affect a pregnancy.

Medical experts suggest getting examined by your doctor before you consider conceiving to go over your health including medications you should get off of before getting pregnant.
