Grand Junction, Colo. (KKCO) --- After a verdict of not guilty was handed down in the George Zimmerman trial on Saturday evening, social media exploded with an outpouring of both relief and disbelief.

Approximately 48,000 tweets per minute were sent out about the announcement directly after Zimmerman heard those final words from the judge... "you have no further business with the court."

The controversial decision came after sixteen hours of deliberation by the six person jury.

A clear line has been drawn between supporters of both sides of the trial that even crosses through several Mesa County homes, pitting families against one another.

"The jury was right and this is the American way is a jury, when they make that decision, I think it's fair," says Orchard Mesa resident, Doug Hawke. His wife, Verna, disagrees. "I don't think it's fair and it has nothing to do with race. It has to do with he's a young man just went out to buy some goodies to eat and got into some kind of altercation on the way home and the next thing you know, he's dead."

The Hawkes have been married for more than sixty years and fortunately, Verna says that although Doug's opinion differs from her own, they haven't experienced any tension between one another.

Florida's "Stand Your Ground" law, that came into play so much during the Zimmerman trial, is similar to Colorado's "Make My Day" law. However they have several significant differences. According to Stand Your Ground, a threatened person does not have to attempt to retreat and may use deadly force at any location, not only on their own property.
