Flu shot clinics remain open

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) - The flu season doesn't look like it's wrapping up anytime soon and neither is the opportunity for vaccinations.

So far, 17 hospitalizations have been recorded in Mesa County from the flu.

Health officials want residents to know flu shots are still available; and it's better to act now, since the vaccination doesn't work instantly.

"Once you receive the flu vaccine it does take about two weeks for the antibodies to build up in your system. However you are building protection everyday," said Tamara Capp, with the Mesa County Health Department.

The Mesa County Health Department offers the flu shot during regular business hours.

The shot costs $20 at the time of service; they can also bill Medicare, Medicaid and most private insurances.

Also, next Tuesday the Salvation Army is hosting a flu shot clinic from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
