Grand Junction, Colo. (KKCO) - District 51 is working to get into compliance with a technology law that requires any technology devices at a school be protected from inappropriate web sites.

The law also requires any device that is taken home by students to be protected. The deadline to meet the new requirement is the end of December 2013.

The law covers all devices including laptops, iPads, or anything that can access the internet.

At a meeting Tuesday night, the District 51 school board got an update on the progress.

"We’ve already started the implementation and have gone through a first round, but there are several devices that we can't protect today, and in those cases, we don't allow students to take them home," says Odus Harwood, director of technology services.

With all the new technology students are now using in the classroom or at home for research and projects, officials say it is a good law to have in place.

Also at Tuesday night's school board meeting, five schools were recognized for receiving the governor's distinguished improvement award. The award is given to schools for their ability to exceed expectations of academic growth gaps.
