Weld County takes steps to limit marijuana shops

GREELEY, Colo. (AP) -- Now that Colorado voters have passed a constitutional amendment allowing for recreational marijuana use, Weld County commissioners are taking steps to prohibit marijuana cultivation, manufacturing facilities, testing facilities and retail stores in unincorporated parts of the county.

Amendment 64 allows for the possession of small amounts of marijuana without a doctor's recommendation, but it also gives local governments the authority to ban stores and cultivation facilities from operating in their communities.

Weld County commissioners introduced an ordinance Monday to ban marijuana farms, facilities and shops. The Greeley Tribune reports it must go through two more readings before it could go into effect Jan. 28.

Commissioners took similar action against new medical marijuana dispensaries in 2010, a decade after Colorado voters approved the use of marijuana for medical purposes.
