Highway 65 closed for avalanche control

DENVER (AP) -- Winter weather, hazardous driving and avalanche warnings are covering Colorado.

The Colorado Department of Transportation shut down Colorado Highway 65 near the Grand Mesa from milemarker 1 to 51 around 7 p.m. Monday night. The Grand Junction Visitor and Convention Bureau says crews are working on avalanche control. The highway was reopened at 12:32 p.m. on Tuesday.

The National Weather Service said up to two feet of snow is expected in the mountains over the next two days. Several inches of snow along the Front Range and Eastern Plains is making driving hazardous.

The Colorado Avalanche Information Center says avalanche conditions could become very dangerous on the Western Slope.

CDOT has also closed Loveland Pass because of heavy snow.

The La Plata Electric Association said heavy, wet snow that downed some power lines led to outages for hundreds of people in southwest Colorado over the weekend, but power was fully restored Monday afternoon.
