District 51 to adopt new calendar

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) – Summer break could be a little shorter for District 51 students.

The district is revamping their calendar with a shorter summer but, in return, students and staff will have more and longer breaks.

Tomorrow night, school board members and administrative officials will meet to finalize the calendar.

"We'll review some of the tweaks to the calendar as presented by the calendar committee and then we will probably have a resolution presented that will finalize the '13 '14 calendar," said Greg Mikolai, District 51 School Board President.

The main reason for the sudden change is to help improve learning.

"Studies show that shorter summers are more effective for students than longer summers because they tend to lose less learning over the course of a shorter summer and there's less review at the beginning of a year," said Mikolai.

The biggest differences will be an earlier start date in the fall, a break in October that the district has never had before, and a week off at Thanksgiving.

Winter break is expected to stay the same but spring break could be extended to two weeks in March.
