5A Wildcats prepare to face 3A's Olathe

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO)-- The two basketball teams from Fruita Monument appear to be on opposite ends of the spectrum prior to their final game of non-conference play this season.

The Lady Wildcats(8-4) are a team on the rise in the SWL and they will undoubtedly contend for the league title this season.

Under the direction of first year head coach Richard Atkins, Fruita's girls are averaging nearly 50 points per contest in their first season with an up-tempo style.

This will be the first time in more than six seasons that the Lady 'Cats have a plus-.500 record entering into league play.

On the other hand, the Fruita boys are a team struggling to find a consistent identity.

The Wildcats lost the majority of their varsity roster, including four starters, to graduation last year. So this winter has been a learning process.

Best case scenario, Fruita Monument will enter league play this weekend with a 6-7 record. This would mark the first season since 2009-10 that the Wildcats are below .500 entering league play.

Both teams face Class 3A's Olathe on Tuesday night at Brownson Arena, starting with the girls at 5:00pm.

The Lady Pirates are having another successful season with a 7-1 record through their first eight contests, but the boys are struggling with a 3-5 record.
