CHSAA debates return of Class 6A

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO)-- The Colorado High School Activities Association (CHSAA) held its first legislative council meeting of the new year on Thursday.

Among the topics of discussion was the addition of a new class to the current classification structure of high school sports.

The last time a Class 6A existed in Colorado was 1990-94. CHSAA cut down to the current 1A-5A because there weren't enough schools in the state to make a 6A affordable.

Due to the constant expansion on the Front Range, an additional class would be feasible in the near future.

Additional concerns addressed at the meeting was the playoff format for Class 5A. CHSAA denied a bill to change the formula for determining host teams in the playoffs. The system used in recent years will remain in place. Meaning that the team with the fewest playoff games at home will host.

In Class 3A, the championship game will be moved from a neutral site to a host site, which means local schools like Palisade, Rifle, or Delta have the potential to host a state title game.

The Board also voted to bump up the date that teams can start practicing with helmets. Memorial Day is now the first day teams can do drills with helmets on.

By rule, basketball teams are allowed to schedule no more than 23 games per regular season. The Board tabled a vote to change that in future seasons.
