ASPEN, Colo. -- An X Games snowmobiler who suffered a nasty crash Thursday night has been airlifted to Grand Junction for treatment.

Caleb Moore began bleeding around his heart after he crashed during the freestyle finals.

The Texan athlete was taken by helicopter to St. Mary’s Hospital, where he underwent surgery Friday morning.

Moore’s spokesperson says he is in the ICU with a heart contusion, but doctors are optimistic.

The 25-year-old was flipping his snowmobile on a jump when the skis caught on the snow. He tumbled over the handlebars, and the machine rolled over him. He had a concussion, but he walked off the course with some help.

Both Moore and his brother, Colten, crashed on the same jump at the Buttermilk ski area Thursday. Colten suffered a pelvic injury, which will not require surgery, according to the Associated Press.
