It's one of the fastest completed projects at Colorado Mesa University, and now the final touches are being put on the Orchard Avenue Apartments so students can move in. KKCO 11 News got a sneak peek of the apartments on Thursday.
This apartment is not your average college dorm. When we think of college housing, we think older buildings, maybe no air conditioning, but this new building is beautiful, and the students living here have a lot to look forward to.
The $11 million project has been completed in under a year, and these students will be plenty comfortable in the fall. The Orchard Avenue Apartments have everything from regular dorm rooms to luxury apartments and suites. The apartments are co-ed and offer three-bed and six-bed apartments.
There are 192 beds to house returning students, meaning those students who are sophomores and older. After touring the facility, who could blame the students for wanting to live there? It’s completely filled up for the 2012-13 school year. With all of the demand, however, only certain students will qualify to live there.
"Students who have displayed strong academic progress, who've been good students for us, those students have had priority in terms of getting into this facility. As they say, it pays to do the right things and those students who have gone about their business in the right way are the students who have had the first shot at this," CMU vice president of student services John Marshall said.
Those students must have a grade point average of at least 2.5. The new apartments also host study lounges, computer labs, and vending machines.
The new furniture, flat screen televisions mounted on the walls (and don’t forget the free laundry!) are sure to be a hit with students, and they'll be moving into the 60,000 square foot building at the end of next week.
CMU is the fastest growing university in the state, so it should come as no surprise that it will be breaking ground on a new residential hall next week as well. That dorm is expected to be more traditional.
There will be an open house of the new Orchard Avenue Apartments on Monday. The public is free to stop by and tour the new building from 1:30 until 3:30 p.m.
