A motorcycle rider is being treated for serious, possibly life-threatening injuries after being hit by a car in Gunnison.

The accident happened around 10:20 a.m. on Sunday on Highway 50 at mile marker 162.

The bike rider was traveling westbound on Highway 50, and stopped to turn southbound onto Gunnison County Road. Colorado State Patrol says he came to a stop because he was yielding to the oncoming traffic.

A Niessan Maxima was also traveling westbound on Highway 50. Authorities say the driver of the Maxima drove through the motorcyclist, striking him and the bike. The motorcyclist was wearing a helmet, but he was thrown from his bike.

The driver of the bike was flown to St. Mary's hospital in Grand Junction where he is being treated for serious, possibly life-threatening injuries. CSP is working to identify him.

The driver of the Maxima was a 16-year old girl from Tarlin, Colo. She is being charged with careless driving causing injury, but Colorado State Patrol says it is investigating whether distracted driving played a role in the accident.

Authorities say there was no significant road closures due to the accident. Count on KKCO 11 News to update you with the latest information as it becomes available.

If the idiot girl who ran into this biker was on her cell phone either talking or texting she should go to jail for a long time. I'm sick and tired of seeing stupid, uncaring morons playing with their phones when they should be driving.

I agree Publius.People should concentrate more on their driving other than their "world".Their "world" will be waiting for them when they park the car.

I don't think the "why" was important. The "what" should be sufficient for a fairly long stretch. (Too many people in Colorado drive with their heads up and locked.)
