Re-designation of The Monument

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) – On Saturday afternoon, Senator Mark Udall and Congressman Scott Tipton announced the creation of a committee that will assist them in drafting legislation to re-designate the Colorado National Monument as a National Park.

"We're not rushing this process, we have no dates certain,” said Udall. “We're going to move slowly, we're going to move methodically we're going to move with the great input and leadership of the 5-member committee that has agreed to serve as the community's voices."

The committee includes director of development for Colorado Mesa University, Kristi Pollard, Glade Park rancher and chairman of the Colorado National Monument working group, Warren Gore, chairwoman of the Colorado National Monument Association Board of Directors, Ginny McBride, chairman of the Grand Junction Area Chamber of Commerce, Michael Burke and member of the Grand Junction Economic Partnership and the USA Pro Cycling Challenge organizing committee, Jamie Lummis.

They will meet several times over the next few months to serve as the voice of the community.

"It just seems to come up about every ten to fifteen years, this whole issue comes up, and it turns into a whole community debate,” said Gore. “I think maybe its time to… address those issues and be proactive in a bill and see if we can settle this issue."

While they plan to get started immediately, Udall and Tipton were insistent that the process will be a slow and methodical one.

The congressman explained that they are aiming for a “win-win” scenario.

“To be able to create jobs be able to preserve and protect and promote one of the most valuable landscapes, in any of our eyes, in this country,” said Tipton.
