Grand Junction, Colo (KKCO) -- The Wrigley Company introduced its newest product this week: a caffeine-infused gum called Alert Energy Gum.
This product, along with caffeinated chips, candy, nuts and other snacks have raised questions among FDA officials about how an increased amount of caffeine can be harmful to children’s health.
The FDA has received 92 reports over the last four years connected to illnesses and hospitalizations due to ingesting high levels of the stimulant.
Doctors say caffeine can cause nervousness, heart palpitations, insomnia, high blood pressure and has also been linked to cardiovascular problems and even death.
However, as long as companies are making money on these products, they will continue to stock shelves with them regardless of the risks involved.
