GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) – Tyler Daniels capped off senior night with a game-ending interception to give Fruita Monument a 28-24 win over Montrose in an SWL game at Stocker Stadium on Thursday night.

Zach Thorpe gave the Wildcats the 28-24 lead with less than two minutes to play when he found Colton Whitehead wide open on a play-action pass that went for a 32-yard touchdown. Montrose had one last chance with two minutes to play, but Drew Casebier’s pass was intercepted by Daniels at the Wildcats 16-yard line with six seconds left in the game.

Daniels also scored the game’s first touchdown on FMHS’s opening drive when Thorpe hit him for a 64-yard touchdown pass. Montrose (5-4, 1-2) answered back with a 21-yard touchdown run from Bryce Gaber to tie the score at 7. The Indians then took the lead when Casebier found Jonathan Sierra with a 13-yard touchdown pass.

Fruita Monument (4-5, 3-1) tied the game at 14-14 after Martin Zupan scored on a 2-yard end-around. Roland McLaren gave MHS the lead once again with a 2-yard run. The Indians took a 21-14 lead at halftime.

The Wildcats tied the game at 21-21 in the third quarter on another Zupan touchdown run, this time from 21 yards away. The Indians responded with a 35-yard field goal from Cory English to reclaim a 24-21 lead.

Fruita Monument entered the game ranked 30th in the 5A Wild Card points standings. The top 32 teams from 5A go to the playoffs. Montrose entered the night ranked 11th in the 4A standings. Only 16 teams make the 4A playoffs.
