Capitol Hill (AP) A presidential veto threat isn't getting in the way of the $290 billion farm bill.

The measure has ailed through both houses of congress with big majorities. Dozens of house and senate republicans ignored the president's objections and helped the package pass by veto-proof margins.

The measue would increase farm subsidies but also provide funding for food stamp and nutrition programs.

President Bush says the bill is too expensive and doesn't do enough to reform subsidies. He argues it doesn't make sense to give taxpayer money to wealthy corporate farmers at a time of record crop prices.

If congress does override Bush's promised veto, it would be for only the second time in his administration. Lawmakers overturned a veto of a water projects bill.
