SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Joe Mazzulla scored a career-high 17 points in his first start of the season to help West Virginia beat top-seeded Kentucky 73-66 in the East Regional final Saturday to advance to its first Final Four since 1959.
Da'Sean Butler scored 18 points for the second-seeded Mountaineers (31-6), who won their 10th straight game. Mazzulla started because West Virginia lost point guard Darryl Bryant to a broken foot this week in practice.
Coach Bob Huggins returned to his alma mater and guided the Mountaineers to their first Final Four since Jerry West was on the team.
John Wall scored 19 points for Kentucky (35-3), which hasn't played in a Final Four since winning the national championship in 1998. John Calipari's first season with the Wildcats was a success in every way until the end. Kentucky missed its first 20 3-pointers.
