AUGUSTA, Ga. — Tiger Woods has posted his best score at the Masters since his last win in 2005.

Woods surged into contention with a 6-under 66, capping his round with a 10-foot birdie putt at the final hole. He’ll go to the weekend with a 7-under 137 total, just three strokes behind leader Rory McIlroy.

This is the best score for Woods at Augusta National since he shot 65 in the third round of the ’05 Masters. He went on to beat Chris DiMarco in a playoff for his fourth green jacket.

A lot has changed since then. Woods is mired in the longest winless streak of his career and he’s still dogged by a sex scandal that ended his marriage and tarnished his image.
