Gas: Source of Smell Identified

The source of the offensive smell lingering in the air downtown has been identified as a tank containing mercaptan.

After a valve separated from the 33 gallon tank, it leaked about two and a half gallons of liquid mercaptan.

Officials say the mercaptan is extremely diluted and is not harmful. However, the body will react to the nasty smell causing headache, dizziness, and nausea.

Officials say the tank was inadvertently delivered to Van Gundy's.

Officials began to clean up the area by removing the contaminated soil, along with the leaking tank.
