Forty firefighters from Colorado will be part of a growing army of firefighters heading to California to help overwhelmed crews.

Sixteen firefighters are from the Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests and Pawnee National Grassland, five from Rocky Mountain National Park, two from the Colorado state Forest Service, six from Larimer County, one from Boulder County and 10 from Americorps. The crews are heading to the Poomacha fire in northeast San Diego County that has destroyed 50 homes, threatens about 2,000 more and has scorched 25,000 acres. It was zero percent contained as of late last night.

Fires from north of Los Angeles to Mexico have destroyed 1,500 homes and forced the evacuations of up to half a million people.
