DENVER (AP) _ The State Supreme Court has cleared the way for an anti-abortion group to begin collecting signatures for a ballot measure that would define a fertilized egg as a person.

If approved by voters, the measure would give fertilized eggs the state constitutional protections of inalienable rights, justice and due process.

The State Supreme Court rejected a challenge from abortion-rights supporters.

The group behind the proposal, Colorado for Equal Rights, now must collect 76,000 signatures in six months to get the measure on the ballot in November 2008. Supporters say similar efforts are under way in other states.
