Grand Junction Police are investigating the president of an elementary school Parent Teacher Council after police say she confessed to taking thousands of dollars from the group's bank account.

Parents at Thunder Mountain Elementary school got a letter when they picked their kids up from school today.

It says Parent Teacher Council President Gretchen Blackford is under investigation for "irregularities in the parent teacher council bank statements."

The letter to parents also says the P.T.C. Board has filed a complaint with law enforcement.

According to police reports Blackford turned herself in two days ago and told investigators she took thousands of dollars from the group for personal use.

Investigators are looking into the exact amount but say it was over $15,000.

11 News spoke to parents at Thunder Mountain, they say they are shocked and upset. One mom says she shocked because she knows Blackford; the mom says Blackford is a wonderful person who would never do such a thing.

School District 51 says the P.T.C. is not affiliated with the school board in any way. School officials say the parent teacher council board raises and manages all of its own funds.

11 News tried to talk to Gretchen Blackford to see what she had to say but when we went to her house, her husband answered the door and said she wasn't home and they didn't want to talk about the investigation.

Blackford has not been charged with a crime but police say they may file charges depending on what they find in their investigation.

Detectives tell 11 News investigations like these usually move very quickly.
