A warning for holiday shoppers, Grand Junction Police say while you are shopping, criminals may be lurking in the parking lot--shopping in your car.

Officers say crime goes up during the holidays. They say many of the car and merchandise thefts that are reported can be avoided if you just follow five easy tips.

Five top tips to protect yourself from becoming a victim:
1. Lock your doors
2. Don't leave merchandise or purses in plain view
3. Guard your electronics
4. Watchout if you have a hatchback, make sure to lock it
5. If you shop at night, park near alot of people or in a well lit area

Many retailers are stepping up security but officers say if you do see a crime happening, don't try to approach the suspect, instead dial 911 and give dispatchers as much information as you can.
