Mesa County Jail is once again allowed to house illegals. This change comes after immigration officials toured the jail last month.
Sheriff Stan Hilkey says ICE was comfortable with what they saw. The Sheriff's Office made a few minor changes to policies ICE had problems with and changed their classification system. It will only hold low level, non–violent illegals. They are also looking at hard wiring phones so the illegals have access to them.
Sheriff Hilkey says it's unfortunate the whole ordeal took place, but he's pleased it worked out in the end, because he says it's the right thing to do.
He said, "if this jail was unable to house ICE detainees, would immigration efforts on the Western Slope be deterred and be left to other areas of the state that would accept them? So I think this helps overcome that."
The holding facility is part of a gym area inside the Mesa County Jail.
