Two men are being ordered to spend 90 days in jail and serve 20 years of unsupervised probation after they each pleaded guilty to one felony count of human smuggling.
A district court judge handed down the sentence yesterday to Eugenio Baizabal–Trujillo and Miguel Lugardo–Peralata. Prosecutors dropped 16 similar felony charges.
Both men were arrested December 5th on I–70 near Fruita. Colorado State Patrol troopers said the two were smuggling 17 people in a van.
Judge Brian Flynn said both men were illegal immigrants who would be deported after serving their jail time. They would face 20 years in prison if they were ever caught trying to re–enter the United States.
All of the van's passengers have been deported.
