The fire at the KREX TV station burned for more than 24 hours destroying the $6 million building. The fire reminds us just how damaging a fire can really be.

Fire officials say the station did not have a sprinkler system or working smoke detectors. Smoke detectors are the most common form of fire protection.

Steve Kesler, President of the Housing and Building Association of Northwestern Colorado says that their is less risk with new homes. Kesler says builders take fire safety very seriously.

But for people with older homes their are a few things you can do to protect your homes and businesses. Jim Remy owner of Affordable Fire Protection suggests installing a sprinkler system in both.

Remy says it only costs 2 to 3 dollars per square foot to install a sprinkler system. He says it takes on average about a week to complete the installation in most homes.

Some businesses are already required to have sprinkler systems.
