There are new details about an accidental shooting that took place over the weekend.
The Mesa County Sheriff's office says the rifle that shot a store employee went off as it was in the hands of a former law enforcement officer.
Officials say former Delta Police Chief Richard Bacher, who is now an employee at Jerry's Outdoor Sports in Clifton, was working on a 2–43 caliber rifle early Saturday morning, and while he was holding it, the gun fired a bullet that hit fellow employee Kenny Franklin in the stomach.
A customer had brought the rifle into the store, not realizing a bullet was still loaded in the chamber.
Fifty-three-year-old Franklin is listed in serious condition at St. Mary's Hospital.
The sheriff's office says they should have the investigation complete in another week or two, and then the District Attorney will decide if Bacher will face charges.
