A single missile was fired Wednesday night from the USS Lake Erie in the Pacific Ocean.
The Department of Defense said the missile struck the non–functioning satellite at more than 17 thousand miles per hour.
Officials expect debris to begin burning up in the atmosphere almost immediately.
It will take about 24 hours before they know whether or not a fuel tank holding approximately one thousand pounds of hydrazine was destroyed.
