Washington (AP) Americans in Serbia are being warned to avoid areas of demonstrations, as protesters continue to violently oppose Kosovo's declaration of independence.
The U.S embassy is warning Americans there to exercise extreme caution, while a senior state department official says the American ambassador to Serbia has asked the state department to evacuate some diplomats from the embassy in Belgrade.
Yesterday, Serb rioters stormed and torched the U.S. Embassy in Belgrade, an incident that has put U.S. diplomats around the Balkans on alert. At least four American embassies in former Yugoslav republics have stepped up security and ordered diplomats to at least limit their movements.
The U.S. Embassy in Belgrade says it will be closed on Monday.
