Plan to Vote By Paper Ballot Moves Forward

AP_A plan to conduct this year's elections mostly by paper ballots has passed its first hurdle at the state capitol.

The Senate State, Veterans and Military Affairs Committee
unanimously backed the bill even though some lawmakers are still concerned about how much it will cost.

County clerks oppose the plan and would rather use their electronic voting machines. those machines were decertified in December because of security and accuracy concerns but have now
been approved for use.

Majority Leader Ken Gordon says the state could be hit with a
lawsuit by voting activists if the machines are widely used. If
that happens, the state would probably end up scrambling to
organize a paper ballot election much closer to election time, he
said.
