Denver (AP) The federal government has released its management plan for drilling on the state's Roan Plateau, rejecting most of the compromises offered by Colorado Gov. Bill Ritter.

The plateau, near Rifle in Western Colorado, is rich in natural gas and oil shale as well as wildlife and ecological diversity.

Interior Assistant Secretary Stephen Allred says the government was able to meet goals laid out by Ritter to balance environmental concerns with the natural resources. But the government's plan did not expand land set aside as the most environmentally sensitive, as
Ritter had asked, and rejected a phased leasing plan for the area.
