Piedmont, Mo. (AP) Residents in the nation's midsection have stacked sandbags or fled from their homes amid overflowing rivers and creeks.

A deluge of as much as a foot of rain in some areas this week has been linked to 13 deaths. Three other people are missing.

Record or near record flood crests are forecast for several towns in Missouri. And the National Weather Service has posted flood warnings from Texas to Pennsylvania, with flooding reported in parts of Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky.

The governor of Missouri is seeking a federal disaster declaration for 70 of Missouri's 14 counties, plus St. Louis.

One woman outside St. Louis spent yesterday moving her family's belongings to the second floor of their home. She calls it “a lot of work” but says “it's worth it to save your stuff.”
