Boston (AP) Baseball's opening day came before daybreak – and it could mean a lot of late arrivals for work today in Boston.

The Boston Red Sox and Oakland Athletics played the season's first game in Japan. That meant a 6 a.m. start time in the east and a 3 a.m. wake-up call for Oakland fans on the west coast.

Today's is baseball's earliest major league opener, and the third taking place in Japan.

One Boston fan admitted it was a little strange to be at a bar watching a red sox game and drinking coffee, instead of a beer. But it was probably worth it.

Some fans at the Boston bars had taken the day off. Others were dressed and headed for work -- and were made even later by the addition of a tenth innning, in which the Red Sox finally emerged as the winners, 6-to-5.

One woman said, “productivity is going to be nil this morning.”

The teams play in Tokyo again tomorrow
