Grand Junction ranks 9th out of all cities for percentage of growth.

It grew 3.7% over a one year period from July 2006 to July 2007. When it comes to fastest growing mini-cities, Western Colorado is also in the top 10. Montrose is the 8th fastest growing micropolitan city in the country. Montrose finished just behind Vernal, Utah.

The oil and gas industry is one of the main reasons for the boom but the Grand Junction Chamber of Commerce also credits Mesa State College and St. Mary's hospital with the increase in population.

Mesa State has seen a 3% increase in enrollment over the past year and a 2% increase over the past couple of years.

Mesa State plans to add 300 additional beds to its dorms.
