Denver (AP) The defense attorney for a government official accused of using restricted criminal information for a campaign ad says he is not a political activist and he was just doing his job.
Defense Attorney William Taylor told jurors in his opening statement Tuesday that Cory Voorhis did not release unauthorized information to the Bob Beauprez gubernatorial campaign against Gov. Bill Ritter in 2006.
The immigration and customs enforcement agent is facing federal charges of exceeding authorized access to government computers. Prosecutors Allege Voorhis obtained information from a database about plea deals Gov. Bill Ritter made with illegal immigrants when he was district attorney.
Prosecutors say the Beauprez campaign later ran an attack ad against Ritter with the information. Voorhis faces up to three years in prison if convicted.
