Chicago (AP) The furor over Barack Obama's church has prompted a call for a nationwide discussion of race among all United Church of Christ congregations and a plea for the media to leave the church alone.

Leaders of the parent denomination want their 10,000 pastors to conduct a “sacred conversation” May 18th.

The mostly white United Church of Christ includes Trinity Church in Chicago, where Obama is a member. Trinity is led by the Reverend Jeremiah Wright, some of whose sermons have condemned the United States government, drawing criticism from Obama and others.

The Reverend Otis Moss III, who is replacing Wright when he retires next month, says Trinity has received threats, and complains that some reporters have annoyed trinity congregants and disrupted worship.

With more than 8,000 members, trinity is the largest United Church of Christ congregation in the country.
