Megan Schmidt has been missing since Monday, March 31st. The Schmidt family says they are receiving little help from authorities.
Heather Benjamin with the Mesa County Sheriff's Office says there really is not much they can do. Benjamin says, "In 2006 we had just under 300 runaways and about 190 of those were individuals. So obviously that 110 difference is the kids running away multiple times." Benjamin adds, "We don't have the resources to go out plus it's not a crime so we just get them in the system and then we wait for them to either turn up at home or to come in contact with law enorcement."
But the Schmidt family says that is not enough. They say the sheriff's office have ignored their case. A tip has the family believing Megan could be in one of the many homeless communities around town.
The family has searched a few of the homeless "tent cities" but could not find Megan. They have also posted flyers all across the city.
Megan was last seen wearing blue jeans, black boots, and a black hoodie sweat shirt. If you have any information you are asked to contact authorities or the family directly at 254-8655.
