Denver (AP) A coalition of state lawmakers is hoping to launch a pilot program aimed at finding and helping abused children and their families.

Democratic house speaker Andrew Romanoff of Denver says a recent survey shows that nearly half of the children who receive child welfare were abused, and 75 percent of them did not get mental health care.

The pilot program would cost about $2.5 million, and provide care for up to 600 children a year in three counties yet to be chosen.

The measure is expected to be introduced later this week.
