Denver (AP) Gov. Bill Ritter says he will sign a measure allowing liquor sales on Sunday, but you'll have to wait until July 6 to celebrate.

Ritter plans to sign the measure later Monday. It won't take effect until the first Sunday in July.

The measure will make Colorado the 35th state to permit Sunday alcohol sales at retail stores.

Liquor store owners fought previous attempts to change the 75-year-old law, saying they would rather stay closed on Sundays.

They backed off this year and focused on defeating another proposal they liked even less, which would have allowed grocery stores to sell high-alcohol beer and wine.
