GJ City Employees Save Taxpayers Big Dollars At Water Treatment Plant

The City of Grand Junction has a new and innovative grease treatment facility which will save Persigo customers hundreds of thousands of dollars because of its cost efficient design.

Wednesday, the staff at the Persigo Wastewater Treatment Plant showed the grease treatment facility to city council members and city staff and explained how they designed and built it.

The wastewater treatment plant needed a better way to handle grease that comes from local restaurants, hospitals, schools and nursing homes while following federal regulations.

According to Persigo Services Superintendent Dan Tonello, it would have cost anywhere from $100,000 to $1.7 million for a new grease treatment system to be built by contractors, but since the Persigo staff developed and designed it themselves, instead it cost $58,000.

Nine Persigo employees received the city's new Innovation Award for their hard work. To build the grease treatment facility an existing concrete vault was expanded and a skimming system was constructed to remove the grease from the top of the water.
