2 Boulder officers face charges in elk shooting

DENVER (AP) -- Two Boulder police officers are facing criminal charges for allegedly conspiring to kill a large elk.

Officers Sam Carter and Brent Curnow were arrested Friday morning and later released. They couldn't immediately be reached for comment.

The Denver Post reports that that they're facing felony counts including tampering with evidence as well as misdemeanor hunting charges in the Jan. 1 shooting. If convicted, they face the loss of their ability to work as police officers.

Investigators say cell phone records show Carter and Curnow texted each other about killing the animal about 10 hours before it was shot.

The shooting created an uproar in the community, with residents holding a vigil for the elk. They say the elk had been seen in their neighborhood for several years.
