Rockslide Closes Highway 139 Indefinitely

Warmer temperatures cause an extremely large rock to break free closing State Highway 139 north of Loma to traffic Sunday afternoon. No one was injured in the rockslide. It happened in the one o'clock hour and was reported by a passing motorist. At least one boulder that fell onto State Highway 139 was nearly the size of a school bus. Workers with the Colorado Department of Transportation are on the scene and say it will likely be Monday before the roadway is reopened to traffic. The event happened near Douglas Pass, an area prone to rockslides. Officials are advising motorists to take Interstate 70 to Rifle and State Highway 13 as an alternate route.
