A tiny speck speeding through the Grand Valley sky Monday morning was an F–A 18 Hornet belonging to the Blue Angels. The Navy's flight demonstration team has agreed to show–off its flying skills at the Grand Junction Air Show in August. Two team members were in town for a pre–season visit with the air show's organizers.
The Blue Angels last wowed crowds in Grand Junction in 2000. The six jets fly just 18 inches apart at times, at speeds of more than 600 miles per hour. Team members say flying with the Blue Angels is a thrill, but they can never let their guard down.
The Navy uses the Blue Angels as a recruiting tool. Air show organizers hope this year's event will bring more than $1.3 million dollars into the local economy. The 2005 Grand Junction Air Show is scheduled for August 12-14.
