Amtrak Train Derails Near Mack
An Amtrak train headed from Chicago to California derailed in Ruby Canyon just outside of Mack late Tuesday night, stranding more than 100 passengers.
Officials at the scene say the train hit a boulder the size of a truck in the middle of the tracks. At least six people suffered minor injuries and were treated and released from St. Mary's Hospital.
The train derailed in an area accessible only by train. Three locomotives and four cars at the front of the train left the rails. The train remained coupled and in line. Rescue locomotives were sent from Grand Junction to the scene. Passengers made it back to the station around 4:00 a.m.
Amtrak made lodging arrangements for stranded passengers in Grand Junction until finally Wednesday afternoon passengers boarded buses for California.
