Hamilton Sundstrand Starts Construction On Singapore Facility

A little more than two months ago, Hamilton Sundstrand announced it was closing its doors. Monday, the company announced it has broken ground on its new facility in Singapore. Officials at Hamilton Sundstrand headquarters say the new facility cost $28 million dollars to build and will be approximately 160,000 square feet.

Originally, officials had told employees they would be using an existing facility in Singapore. Hamilton Sundstrand Communications Spokesperson, Peg Hashum, says the existing facility which has been in use since 1971 is just too small.

Hamilton Sundstrand has 540 employees at its Singapore facility, but will expand with the addition of their new facility. The facility should be complete at the end of this year. Layoffs at the Grand Junction Hamilton Sundstrand plant will begin in June.

Officials for the company say they are closing the Grand Junction plant because of significant excess manufacturing capacity and to lower costs. They say the Singapore plant is the prime location since it is a hub for Asia and is home to several Asian air carriers which are Hamilton Sundstrand's prime customers.
