Gay Rights Bill Debated In Colorado Statehouse
A bill proposed by a Denver State Senator would extend Colorado's discrimination law to include sexual orientation. Under current state law, a person may not be discriminated against on the basis of disability, race, creed, color, sex, age, national origin, or ancestry. The proposed amendment brought forth by Senator Jennifer Veiga, (D), Denver, would expand the law's domain to include sexual orientation and gender variance.
The bill was approved 4-3 in the Senate Business, Labor, and Technology Committee. This is not the first time the amendment has made its way through the Senate. Western Equality Board Member Jeff Basinger hopes the bill will be the first of many victories.
If Governor Bill Owens signs the bill, Colorado will join 27 other states with similar discrimination laws.
